68th Annual Daytona Bike Week 2009

Daytona Beach, FL February 27 - March 8, 2009 From racing to swap meets to cole slaw wrestling, there is something for everyone at Daytona Bike Week. So make your plans and come on down. A tradition since January 24, 1937, marked by the inaugural running of the Daytona 200, Bike Week has become a 10-day festival that takes place throughout Daytona Beach and Volusia County and surrounding communities. Hundreds of thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts now enjoy hundreds of events annually.

Bike Week has always had a flavor of its own, but sometime after World War II, the event took on a rugged edge and it gained an unsavory reputation. While the motorcycle race was organized, many of the events were not. Locals were not enthusiastic about the yearly "invasion" of the cyclists. In the late 1980s, a task force was formed to improve relations between law enforcement officals and bikers. It was then that changes in the scope and magnitude of the event transformed it into the "racey" but manageable event enjoyed by so many today.

In its 68th year, Bike Week will feature the prestigious Daytona 200 by Honda motorcycle race at Daytona International Speedway to be run under the lights for the first time along with expos, concerts, street festivals and scenic rides.

Annual Ride To Work Day

June 15, 2009 Everywhere USA  The annual RTW Day moves to the ‘third Monday in June.’ The next Ride to Work Day is MONDAY, JUNE 15, 2009. It is the 18th annual Ride to Work Day. Reasons for an earlier annual Ride to Work Day include:

  • The new day is not as hot in most northern hemisphere areas, and not as cold in most southern hemisphere areas. June weather is more favorable worldwide.
  • The new day provides an increased opportunity for more riders to Ride to Work. Many workplaces close for summer holiday in July - especially in Europe.
  • A Monday event encourages motorcycle and scooter commuting to continue during the entire week.
  • Positive media exposure will increase. Sundays are slower ‘news days’ so there will be more coverage like this: “Look for more motorcycles on your commute tomorrow, as Monday is the annual Ride to Work day...”
  • The Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) has endorsed this day, and is promoting the ‘Third Monday in June’ worldwide as the annual Ride to Work Day.

MSTA STAR 2009

Staunton, VA June 21-25, 2009 Sport Touring Association Rendezvous (STAR). For 2009 the MSTA's national event is east of the Mississippi in Staunton, Virginia. This is the "go to" event of the year. Be ready for the twisties in the mountains of Virginia/West Virginia. The area if full of things to do, and your event organizer's are working discount's for all the popular attractions. This year's raffle bike, a 2009 Triumph Sprint ST, will be given away at STAR. STAR gets better every year, and we are continuing that direction. STAR 2009 is a Sunday - Thursday event scheduled for June 21 - June 25. Members from all over attend STAR and some will extend the event into a two or three week trip from their homes on the other side of the country. It's always great to catch up with friends from faraway places that we seem to only see at STAR. Plus, it's a great opportunity to associate an actual person with the electronic "online" persona that is often the only way we know others in these high-tech times. In addition to numerous regional events, each year MSTA conducts one national rally called STAR. The site for STAR changes every year, and usually alternates between the eastern and western U.S. using the Mississippi river as the division line. Sites are chosen that can accommodate around 500 of us and that showcase parts of the country with roads and scenery we seek out as sport touring enthusiasts. For a map click HERE. For more information call 276-647-3162, Send E-mail, or go to MSTA STAR 2009. Attendance at MSTA events requires membership in the organization. A free 1 year membership is given when you register for this event.

International Women & Motorcycling Conference

AMA Women & Motorcycling Conference August 19 - 22, 2009. The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) has announced that the 2009 edition of AMA Women & Motorcycling Conference will take place at the Keystone Resort & Conference Center in Keystone, Colorado, on August 19-22, 2009.

Lodging reservations can be made now by calling Keystone at (800) 258-0437. Be sure to mention group code CZ0AMAW.

Located approximately 90 minutes west of Denver, Keystone’s state-of-the-art amenities and infrastructure, as well as its proximity to world-class motorcycling destinations within Colorado’s Rocky Mountain region, are expected to substantially increase the stature of what has become known internationally as the premier women’s motorcycling event. The selection of the Keystone site was the culmination of several months of research by the AMA and representatives of prominent women’s motorcycling organizations.

The 2009 event will be the fifth AMA International Women & Motorcycling Conference. Previous conferences took place in 1997, 2000, 2002 and 2006. The AMA looks to continue to build upon the success of past conferences with the Keystone event, which will be the first Women & Motorcycling Conference held west of the Mississippi River.

The 2006 conference took place at the Classic Center in Athens, Georgia, and hosted more than 1,100 attendees who enjoyed a wide range activities including seminars and panel discussions, a product vendor exposition, industry keynote speakers, motorcycle skills courses and workshops, guided rides, live entertainment; and catered meals.

Industry support for the event was strong and included popular demo rides from manufacturers such as Harley-Davidson, BMW, Buell, Ducati, Honda, Kawasaki, Kymco, Ridley and Yamaha.
